Many of you know that I have very curly, frizzy and dry hair. If i did not use any of these products and let my hair naturally dry, my hair would look like a giant frizzy afro. Curly hair tends to be very dry because a curly hair strand is spiral therefore it is harder for natural oils from your scalp to come down and coat each hair strand. Curly girls like me tend to have an arsenal of products just to manage their frizzy dry hair. So far in my life i have used hundreds of hair products, all designed to give you the perfect curl; shiny, defined and bouncy. Many of these products claim to be great at what they promise but end up not delivering. Today i want to share the products I have recently discovered that make my curly hair somewhat beautiful. I want to start by saying that I use a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner made for dry hair. I have also used shampoos and conditioners for curly hair also, they both usually work about the same. Now when I do my hair naturally curly I use a combination of hair styling products to get my curls to look shiny, defined and bouncy. I have never gotten the perfect curly hair style but Ive come close and so far these are products that make it happen. Before anything I wash my hair and condition it. After that i towel dry it and use the Ojon restorative hair serum. This product retails for $17 for a 0.85 fl. oz. bottle or $25 for a 1.7 flo. oz. bottle. You can get this at Ojon.com or at Sephora. This product is very oily but a little goes a long way. If you have oily hair or normal hair, i don't recommend it. It should be used on very dry hair. You can also use this product to heat style your hair because it also protects the hair shaft from heat tools. I use it with my flat iron to straighten my hair. I just apply it to towel dried hair, blow dry and then flat iron. It leaves my hair soft, shiny and straight.
If I'm using it to wear a curly style then i comb it through and either use the garnier fructis curl sculpting gel or the suave captivating curls mousse.
The curl sculpting gel has a runny but creamy consistency. It smells pretty good and it retails for about $4.59 for a 5.1 fl. oz. bottle. You can buy this at your local pharmacy, target or walmart. This cream gel contains fruit micro-waxes, polymers and silicone's, that are suppose to leave your curls defined and bouncy while conditioning your hair.
After I have applied this to my hair I combed it through, part my hair, scrunch it and combed it through with my finger to define the curls better. Then I just let it air dry. Usually i get a pretty soft curl with these two products. Not crunchy and hard at all.
If I use the Suave captivating curls whipped cream mousse instead of the gel, I use it after the ojon serum and basically repeat the same exact steps.
This mousse is very creamy and moisturising to my hair. It is alcohol free, it has an anti-frizz complex that helps define and hold natural curl patterns. It leaves my curls defined and shiny but it tends to leave them a little hard, which i don't mind because they still look natural. This product also smells really good, it retails for $2.74, which is awesome, very cheap and it works just as well as very expensive products. You can get this at your local pharmacy, target or wallmart.
If I don't use the first product I mentioned before: the Ojon restorative hair serum, I use the Shea Moisture organic coconut and hibiscus curl and style milk. Shea Moisture is a new line of hair products that are mostly marketed towards African American women, men and babies. The line is completely organic and it smells AMAZING! This product retails for $9.99 for a 8 fl. oz. bottle at target you can also buy this at Walgreen's pharmacy.
This style milk is a no rinse protective and styling cream. It's suppose to detangle, condition and control curls while restoring body and shine. It contains coconut oil, silk protein and neem oil. I usually apply this right after I wash my hair with shampoo and conditioner. After my hair is toweled dried. I add some to my palms, rub them together and apply it to my hair. Then I comb it through and apply mousse or cream gel. The great thing about this product is that it can also be used to heat style your hair. I use it to straighten my hair with a flat iron. I usually just apply it, blow dry my hair and then flat iron. I leaves my hair super healthy looking, and stick straight.
The last product I want to write about is a new product called Garnier Fructis Style curl calm down anti-frizz cream. I just started using this hair cream and I'm not sure how i feel about it yet. It is thick and creamy, very moisturizing and kind of heavy. I can tell that it leaves a lot of product residue in my hair. I have used it a couple of times with the mousse and cream gel. It works pretty good but I think that it might be too heavy for me to use as a styling product along with the gel or mousse. It says, that its suppose to to create perfect fizz free curls and moisturize your hair. It contains Shea butter and it retails for $3.49 for a 6.0 fl. oz. bottle at target.com, you can also buy it at target stores, your nearest pharmacy or wallmart.
These are the products that I currently use in my hair to either create a pin straight hair style or shiny defined and bouncy curls. Before I end this I want to say that even if your hair is not naturally curly, you can still use these products to create curl or to flat iron your hair. I'm sure that they will work just as good err...maybe you wont get super tight curls but you will get nice wavy shiny hair. I hope this review helps if your a curly haired girl like me that just hasn't been able to find the right combination of products to create that perfect curl or just looking to try something new.
